(Tabebuia spp.), more commonly known as Brazilian Walnut or “Iron wood” is an extremely dense, durable and beautiful tropical hardwood from South America. The highest quality and most consistent Ipe is harvested in Brazil. It is one of the most stable of all the durable timbers. It dries extremely well with little checking, twisting, or bow. It is widely recognized for its strength and natural resistance to decay. It can be used in ground contact without preservatives or additional treatments. Ipe has become the predominant specie used for residential decks as well when the most attractive and durable wood is desired.
(Manilkara spp.), also known as Bulletwood or Brazilian Redwood, is a hardwood native from South America. Massaranduba is one of the hardest and most durable timber species in the world. It is naturally durable and resistant to rot and decay, making it an excellent choice for exterior applications. Massaranduba is surprisingly easy to work for a heavy wood and despite its density. It machines and finishes to a very smooth surface. Massaranduba hardwood is usually compared to California Redwood and it is the likely alternative to Ipe. The natural and vibrant reddish-brown color is what attracts many to this exotic decking wood.
(Apuleia leiocarpa), also known as Brazilian Ash, is a dense and naturally durable Brazilian timber. Its honey golden-brown color range, fine grain and moderate cost make it an attractive alternate to more expensive hardwoods like Ipe. The light color also makes it attractive for a deck that will have heavy sun exposure but will not become overly hot to the touch. A Garapa deck is resistant to rot, decay, splinters, scratches, and even fire – naturally without any chemical treatments.WHY USE GARAPA?
(Dipteryx odorata), also known as Brazilian Teak or Golden Teak, is a naturally durable Brazilian timber with a density similar to Ipe. Cumaru is a South American wood that has a beautiful yellow-brown color and a fine interlocking grain pattern. Its consistent golden brown color and moderate cost make it an attractive alternate to more expensive hardwoods such as Ipe. Cumaru is resistant to rot and decay, making it an excellent choice for exterior applications such as decking. As a decking wood, Cumaru excels with high hardness, great strength, and reliable stability.
(Hymenaea courbaril), also known as “Brazilian Cherry”, is exceptionally stiff, strong, and hard—representing a great value for woodworkers seeking high-strength, low-cost lumber. Jatoba’s thick wood is incredibly stain resistant, durable and long lasting. In fact, it’s actually been proven to be impervious to insects and even termites. Its color makes it stand out compared to other types of hardwood.
(Astronium lecointei), also known as Tigerwood is an exotic Brazilian hardwood that grows primarily in the northeastern Amazon. Muiracatiara is one of the finest quality hardwoods available that features a unique light golden-brown to reddish-brown coloring with exotic black and brown streaks. Tigerwood is naturally resistant to rot and decay which results in a 30+ year lifespan without preservatives.
